A caring village
To the Editors:
COMMUNITY FORUM
When did liberal become a dirty word? When did taking care of people become bad? When did educating everyone, reforming the criminal, and having health care for all become evil thoughts?
The "Christians" came to America hundreds of years ago and slaughtered the Native Americans. We should have learned from the Native Americans how to have a caring village one whose members don't turn their backs on one another.
When did money become the central focus oflife-keeping, having, getting, amassing,— at the expense of others?
I'm sorry, but I am not willing to sacrifice others so that I may have more. I am also not willing to sacrifice my sexuality for the “party.” We are put on Earth to learn and grow in a community. We do not grow at the same pace, but before one group wants to legislate everyone's lives, maybe they should grow a little more themselves.
Tax me more if it will help one more person come up the ladder.

Lesser of two evils
To the Editors:
Alas, November 5 is upon us, and it's time to choose the lesser of two evils, Martin Hoke or Dennis Kucinich. I'm told, “Vote for Dennis, he's for an inclusive community and equal rights." I will vote for Dennis, but not because I believe these empty promises.
Kucinich claims he is for an inclusive community, but he does not support same-sex marriage. He prefers instead to support the

Defense of Marriage Act with an Employment Non-Discrimination Act added on, as ifENDA support makes DOMA palatable. It doesn't. He says he believes in equality, yet at Stonewall Cleveland's Candidate Night he proclaimed the military don't-ask-don't-tell policy acceptable and a dead issue. It's not.
If the gay community is going to support a candidate with these intentions, simply because he's the lesser of two evils, then a message needs to be sent with the votes. These candidates need to understand we are watching, and as soon as they can be replaced with truly pro-gay candidates, they will be. Oration

DOMA and don't-ask-don't-tell, but at least he's honest about his intentions. You can't say that about many candidates. I admire Kucinich's honesty and I do believe he is not a homophobe. I believe he sincerely wants to serve his constituents, even us. But supporting DOMA is not the way to serve us. So once there is a candidate who supports same-sex marriage and denounces don't-ask-don't-tell, I'll say farewell to Dennis Kucinich.

So I'm voting for Kucinich anyway. Why? Because he's not Martin Hoke and he's not snowballing me. I'm sickened that he supports

To the Editors:
I was very pleased to see Ken MacCutcheon's letter in the October 11 issue of the Chronicle. He was right in suggesting consideration of Harry Browne of the Libertarian Party as an alternative to the current duo paraded before the American people—as if they were the only presidential candidates available to voters. Harry Browne is on the ballot in all 50 states and the party has more than doubled in the last 18 months. It's a great time to be a Libertarian and I believe we are the future.
Harry, and all Libertarians, believe in individual liberty, personal responsibility and freedom from government on all issues, at all times. We are neither liberal or conservative as many would traditionally classify political parties. You, and every American, have the right to speak and write freely, the right to financial privacy and the right to choose and act on their own personal values, to work together in their families and communities to achieve the goals they set for themselves.
I hope your readers will consider casting their vote for Harry Browne and Jo Jorgensen (the only woman on a major party ticket this election round). I ask everyone to vote their conscience and I know you will. Many thanks to the Chronicle for their courage in publishing a variety of opinions.
